Although it is impossible to guarantee that pathogenic micro-organisms such as Legionella will not exist in a water system, through proactive management and effective control programmes it is possible to dramatically reduce the factors that allow those responsible bacteria to proliferate and spread.

What Are My Duties Under The Law?

The responsibility for risk assessment rests with the employer or person who controls the premises.

• Are conditions present that will encourage bacteria to multiply? E.g. water temperature between 20-45°C
• Are water droplets being produced and if so are they being dispersed?  E.g. consider showers and aerosols from cooling towers.
• Will anyone who may be susceptible come into contact with contaminated water droplets?
